Elfriede was born in Stalluponen, Germany and immigrated to the United States as a child with her mother and father. The family settled in Rochester, NY where Elfriede attended public schools and Eastman School of Music.

After marrying Jothan Benke in 1943, she served in the churches that he pastored in North Dakota, South Dakota, New York, and Wisconsin. She was a choir director, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader. She also held positions in the North American Baptist Women's Missionary Fellowship at local, state, and national levels.

She was a talented vocalist, pianist, and organist. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, interior decorating, and gardening.

Elfriede will be remembered for her love of music, the joy that she brought to others around a dinner table, and her lively spirit.
