After graduating from Whitewater State Teachers College, he taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Rio until he enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Reconnaissance Photographer in the 17th Photo Technical Unit following Patton across Europe in World War II.
On furlough, he married his sweetheart, Edith Musgrove, on October 13, 1945. Chuck lived in Racine from 1945 to 1985, working at Young Radiator Company for 39 years, coaching Little League Baseball, taking part in Indian Guides and Y Bees at Camp Anokijig where he helped build the Health Lodge and he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. He retired to care for Edith, his wife of 38 years.
After she died, he moved to Pasadena, CA and married Emma Lee Halverson. For seventeen years, he was an active member of the Pasadena community involved in the First United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club, the Halverson family and he was an avid golfer.
He will be greatly missed by his two sons and daughters-in-law, two daughters and two sons-in-law; Jim and Dottie Shuman of Moorcroft, WY, Alan and Pam Shuman of Racine, WI, David and Carole (Shuman) Pucely of Racine, WI, Richard and Alice (Shuman) Johnson of Madison, WI; nine grandchildren, Kerrie, Eric, Sara, Trisha, Rebecca, Cassie, Stephanie, Ryan and Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Brent and Kendra; three brothers and a sister, Neil Shuman and Robert Shuman of California, David Shuman of Michigan, Doris Peters of Whitewater, WI and the Halverson family.
A memorial service will be held in Pasadena, CA at the First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2002. He will be buried at Cold Spring Cemetery at 11 a.m. on November 10, 2002. Family and friends may gather to celebrate his life at 12 p.m. at the Cold Spring Inn near Whitewater.
