Carl Robert Sundbeck, 100, of Manistee died on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, surrounded by his family at his home in Manistee.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1915 in Manistee, son of the late Fred and Anna (Schudlich) Sundbeck. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Feb. 10, 1942 until Jan. 7, 1946.

Carl married Marie A. Picardat on Oct. 30, 1946 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee. She preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 2013.

He and Marie were loyal followers of their grandchildren’s sporting and music events. He enjoyed woodworking, making wooden toys for his family members, carpentry, and gardening. Carl was employed for 34 years with the Century Boat Company in Manistee, retiring in 1980.

Carl and Marie loved to dance or play cards on Saturday nights, making Saturdays their special social night. In his retirement, he could be seen each afternoon walking around Manistee, enjoying the community. He was a communicant of Guardian Angels Catholic Church of Manistee.

Carl is survived by his daughter Ann (Jim) Makowski of Manistee and their children, Mike and Jenny Makowski of Bear Lake; Matthew and Charity Makowski of Midland, and Sarah and John Clapp of Raleigh, N.C.; his son Dale (Susan) Sundbeck of Manistee, and their son Steve Sundbeck and his wife Julia Thompson of Arlington, Va.; his daughter Janet Morrill, of Newaygo and her children Dominic Morrill (Brooke Westphal), of Clinton Township; Nathan Morrill, of Ludington and Brandon Morrill, of Big Rapids.

Also surviving are Carl’s great grandchildren, Alecia Makowski (DJ Raspotnik) of Ludington; Taylor Makowski and Rachael Makowski; and Devon, Xander and Brennan Selders, all of Bear Lake; Kristin and Doug Card of Honolulu, HI; Megan Makowski, of Midland and Maggie Sundbeck of Arlington, Va. and Benjamin Clapp of Raleigh, N.C., one great-great grandson Doug Card Jr of Honolulu, HI, his sister Mary Kukla of Manistee, and his sister in-law, Lu Sundbeck of Manistee. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by five sisters: Wilma Anderson, Margaret Ax, Norma Perry, Betty Sundbeck and Clara Dalzell and by three brothers, Fred Sundbeck Jr, Edward J. Sundbeck and Floyd Sundbeck.

Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan.16 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee with Rev. Richard Schaeffer celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery where graveside military services will be conducted by the members of the Manistee County United Veterans Council Ritual Squad.
