LATIMER-Ruth Irene Yakel, 79, of Latimer died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Services were held Monday Jan. 13, at the Zion Reformed Church rural Sheffield with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Arthur Zewert officiated.

Ruth was born July 22, 1923, in rural Franklin County to John and Pauline DeVries Abbas. She attended school in Latimer where she was active in basketball, and graduated in 1941. Following graduation, she married Chris Yakel in California. They lived in Latimer where they owned and operated the Latimer Locker for 20 years. In the 1970s they sold the locker and retired. They traveled to Texas and Hawaii and spent time golfing. Her hobbies were golfing, fishing and playing cards. Ruth was an avid sports fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a member of the Zion Reformed Church, the Latimer Golf Club and active in the Latimer Community Center's activities.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Yakel and wife Francine of Latimer and Roger Yakel and wife Tootie of Iowa Falls; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dale Abbas, and wife Martha of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1985; and a brother, Edward Abbas.
