Richard James was born in Woolwich-Kent, England to Alexander James and Mary Margaret Scott [James]. He was baptized on February 23, 1796 at St Mary Magdalene Church in Woolwich, (Source, London births, baptisms, marriages and burials). Richard married Mary Lomax [James]18 May 1820 in Bishops Castle, Shropshire, England. They had eight children. Mary Agatha James 1819, Alexander James 1821, Margaret Jane James 1825, Richard Scott James 1827, Henry Wear James 1831, Edward Lomax James 1836, Angelina Charolett "Angie" James 1839 and Elizabeth Angelina James. Richard served in the British Army during the Napoleonic War on the Peninsula and fought in severl battles. His sword has been passed down generation to generation. He also served in in India where he was assigned to the Benevolent Ophan's Society, an organization run by the British Army.Rechard was a merchant and Justice of the Peace in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. He made several enemies as a Judge and his his house was bombed. In 1835 he bought the south half of Lot 7 next door to the building containing the "Quirk's Long room" from John Quirk. there he built his home on Queen Street, with it's two bay windows and upstairs gallery that is still tanding. In the 1870's his youngest daughter Angie changed the home over to a two family house. It is now a museum for the city.
