1944 March Quarter death registration-
Name: -'Gower' (sic), Ellis R---Age: 27
District: Newtown (Volume & Page: 11b & 147)
---1667 HCU’s Handley Page Halifax (#DG358) bomber aircraft, with an aircrew of nine, took off from RAF Faldingworth for a cross-country navigation training flight. DG358 flew into a hail storm, encountering icing, lightning as well as engine trouble; structural failure occurred causing the aircraft to crash near a farm at Bryn-y-Groes in Wales and taking the lives of the entire crew.

**On the church wall in the Aberhafesp Parish Church in Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire, Powys, there is a handwritten Roll of Honour with dedicatory inscription. [above the list of names is a drawing of a Halifax Bomber; at the bottom there is an illustration of the tractor and trailer that carried them to their rest at Bwlch-y-ffridd on the evening of the accident].
The inscription reads-
“IN MEMORY OF THE R.A.F. (V.R.) AIRMEN WHO DIED
WHEN THEIR HALIFAX AIRCRAFT CRASHED AT
GLASCOED, BWLCH-Y-FFRIDD IN THIS PARISH
ON 23RD JANUARY1944
( 9 NAMES LISTED)
THEIR BODIES RESTED AT
BWLCH-Y-FFRIDD INSTITUTE
ON THE EVENING OF THE 23RD.”
