First Lieutenant Stewart was a RF-51D Mustang fighter bomber pilot assigned to the 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing, U.S. Air Force. On 25 August 1951, while on a combat mission and diving on a target, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, exploded in mid-air and crashed. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on 31 December 1953. His remains were not recovered.
His name is inscribed here on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
