Daughter of Charles Jayne Saunders and Mary Eliza Albin, wife of Benjamin Franklin Abrams and mother of Chester B. and Harry Burton Abrams.
Obituary - Mrs. Jayne Abrams, direct descendent of William Jayne, who landed in Setauket in 1920, and well known in historic and fraternal circles, died in the Huntington Hospital Sunday morning, following a short illness. She resided on East Main Street, Hungtinton.
A native of Great River, she was born on February 26, 1877, the daughter of Charles and Mary Albin Saunders. Educated in Great River, she was married on her 19th birthday, Feb. 26, 1896 to Benjamin F. Abrams, in the little Methodist Chapel at Great River which edifice was very dear to her. Her father, Charles J. Saunders, was the first to join it, the first to be married in it and his funeral was the first to be held in it, and the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Abrams was the last to be performed in it.
Mrs. Abrams had been residing in Amityville for some time prior to their marriage, and they made their home there following the ceremony, later living in Hicksville, Huntington, and other Long Island villages. They came to Huntington 29 years ago.
After moving to Huntington, she became active in fraternal, historical, and church work. She was a charter member, life member and a past Royal Matron of the Nathan Hale Court 83, Order of the Amaranth, left member of Jepthah's Daughter Chapter, Order Easter Star member; member of Ellsworth Rebekah Lodge 476, I.O.O.F.; chaplain and chairma of the National Defense Committee of Ketewamoke Chapter, Daughters American Revolution; Suffolk County Historian of the New England Women and member of the Huntington Historical Society, the Huntington Post of American Legion Auxiliary and the Huntington Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, two sons, Chester Abrams of Huntington, and Harry Abrams of Greenlawn, two grandsons, three brothers, Town Clerk James Tooker and John Tooker, of Babylon, and George Tooker of Islip, and three sisters, Mrs. Andrew Heberer of Hicksville, Mrs. Sarah Dickey of Far Rockaway, and Mrs. May Skidmore of Babylon.
The Eastern Star service was held Monday night at 7 o'clock at the Jacobsen's Funeral Home, New York Ave., Huntington Station, followed by the Amaranth, Rebekah, and Legion Auxiliary services. Religious service was held at the Huntington Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Charles M. Hart, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Lebanon Cemetery, Great River.
