Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of B. B. Lawson and Carrie Matthews, both born in S. C. He was the widower of Essie Sauls Lawson. He was the manager of the Columbia Cafe. He resided at 1821 Divine St. and died at Ridgewood TB Camp of (faded and difficult to read but given where he died, most likely pulmonary TB) pul. ?? and bronchial asthma. The informant was C. M. Lawson of Columbia, S. C.

Found in The State 21 July 1937: John Benjamin Lawson, 50, of 1821 Divine street, died at 10:10 last night after an illness of several months. Mr. Lawson formerly operated the Columbia cafeteria and at one time operated a filling station. He was a member of the First Baptist church. Funeral plans were incomplete last night.

Found in The State 22 July 1937: Funeral services for John Benjamin Lawson, 50, of 1821 Devine street, who died Tuesday night, will be conducted at 4 o'clock this afternoon from the Dunbar Funeral home by the Rev. John H. Webb, pastor of the First Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. F. Clyde Helms, pastor of Shandon Baptist church. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. A native of Belton, Mr. Lawson had made his home in Columbia for a number of years and formerly operated the Columbia Cafeteria and automobile stations in the city. He was a member of the First Baptist church. He is survived by his stepmother, Mrs. B. B. Lawson of Columbia; two brothers, C. M. Lawson and Frank S. Lawson of Columbia; and three sisters, Mrs. Ervin Wey and Mrs. Lucille Dunnavant of Columbia and Mrs. C. E. Houston of McClellanville.
