Dwight was born on February 20, 1937 in Luray, KS to Chester and Elsie (Schneider) Cobb. He was raised in Hutchinson, KS. Dwight served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1959 in combat military police units in Germany, France, and Lebanon.

Dwight was a detective for the Johnson County Sheriff's Department for 23 years, retiring in 1992. Prior to this, he was captain and assistant chief of police at Great Bend, KS. In 1998, he moved to Baldwin City, KS. In 1999, he became a reserve officer for the Baldwin City Police Department. For several years, he also volunteered for Johnson County Developmental support in Lenexa, KS.

He was a life member of Ottawa V.F.W. Post No. 5901, Past Quartermaster of Olathe V.F.W. Post No. 2993, and he was a member of LeRoy Post No. 19 Gardner American Legion. He was also a member of Palmyra Masonic Lodge No. 23 and Past Master of Olathe Masonic Lodge No. 19.

Dwight is survived by his mother and sister, Elsie and Janet Cobb, his wife, Virginia, and his children Julie Johnson, Avis Gonzalez Arroyo, Phillip Akers, Richard Lee Cobb, Darrin Cobb, and Jaime Gramlich as well as his wife's children Daniel Slater, Johnathon Harkin, Christina McCluskey, Dianna Bayless, and Angela Baxley. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, his wife's 11 grandchildren, and two great grand children.

Dwight was preceded in death by his father, Chester Cobb, and his grandson, Ryan Cobb.
