Carol was with the CSX Railroad and a farmer in Newberry, S. C. He was a licensed airplane pilot. Ann Drafts (a Newberry College student) first saw Carol as he drove an old car in th 1971 Newberry bicentennial parade (all Newberry men grew beards for the bicentennial). Ann was taking piano lessons from Carol's brother, Kernie (and is presumed to have met Carol thereafter through Kernie). He and Ann were adoptive parents to John Marker Wessinger (who would mary & have 2 daughters & became an interventional radiologist) and Ginger Ellen (who would marry T. E. Slusarchyk & have a girl & boy & later live in Colorado Springs). The marriage ended, and Ann moved to Florida and later married pastor Klaus Koch. Carol married Bobbie Folk, and that marriage ended. His health declined seriously during his relationship with fiancee, Sylvia.

after McSwain-Evans FH obituary:

Born on March 21, 1934, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Jonas Levi and Essie Taylor Wessinger. He served in the S.C. National Guard and was retired from the CSX Railroad. He was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Mr. Wessinger is survived by a son, Dr. John Mark Wessinger; a daughter, Ginger Ellen Wessinger; his fiancee, Sylvia Metts Williams; grandchildren, Laura Ann Slusarchyk, Robert Slusarchyk, Lindler Reice Wessinger, Lydian Haze Wessinger and Madeline Casteel (granddaughter of Sylvia, Carol being the only man she has known as Gran'Pa).

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Matthew Titus. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 12:30 – 1:30 pm in the St. John's Room. Memorials may be made to The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Funeral & Graveside service:

Carol was a very supportive member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, as detailed by Pastor "Matt" Matthew Titus. A latest example was his gift of the handbells played by the "Redeemer Ringers" as they performed "Thine is the Glory" beautifully. Organist was Huger P. Caughman, Jr. This had been preceded by the congregational singing of "Shall We Gather at the River". His son, John and John's two daughters gave a sweet rendition of "Oceans" by Hillsong. The sending congregational hymn at the end of the funeral was the always moving "Amazing Grace".

As the funeral procession went to the cemetery, I was moved deeply by the fact that the old-timey Southern custom of all other vehicles stopping in respect as the procession drives to the cemetery is alive and well in Newberry and includes all races in this show of respect. The graveside service was on a clear, windy, springtime sunny day. Pallbearers were Gary Bouknight, James Bouknight, Donald Wessinger, Douglas Wessinger, Larry Wessinger, and Olin Wessinger.
