William L. Deppe (Bill), 86, formerly of Berwick, passed away peacefully Tuesday February 23, 2016, with his children at his bedside, at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born May 28, 1929 in Berwick, a son to the late John F. and Mamie (Wentzel) Deppe.

After graduating from Berwick High School, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served his country from 1947 until 1950 earning money for college. He then enrolled at Penn State University where he majored in Chemical Engineering and graduated with the Class of 1954. While attending Penn State, he met his future bride, the love of his life for 31 years, the former Elaine Michael, who passed away in 1988. Bill worked as a design engineer and project manager charged with designing chemical and nuclear power plants in West Virginia and Pennsylvania locations. He was an engineer’s engineer who appreciated attention to detail and efficiency. His interests included hosting family events, Nittany Lion football, feeding the birds and chipmunks, as well as caring for his loyal pet dogs. The weather was of particular interest to him stemming from his Air Force Meteorology training. He also found great pleasure in the serenity of Pennsylvania rolling hills. His favorite meal included a good hearty steak, medium rare. He was well known for his home grown tomatoes, pasta salad and his disdain of any dandelion that dared to grow in his lawn. Most of all, Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and “spoiling” his grandchildren with a wide selection of ice cream.

Surviving are sons: Michael N. Deppe and wife, Mary of DE. and Martin W. Deppe and wife, Cynthia of CA., daughter: Marlene E. Patterson and husband, Rodney of VA., grandchildren: Kenneth, Stephanie, Austen, Meagan, Will, and Teddy, and great-grandchildren: Nathan and Gavin.

As well as his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.

Visitation is 10-11 AM Saturday, February 27 at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd St., Berwick. Bill’s funeral will follow the visitation at 11 AM. Pastor Chad Hebrink of Grace Lutheran Church will serve as the officiant. Burial with military honors will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
