Sister M. John Bosco (Rose Marie) Schmidt, 78, a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 60 years, died in Mercy Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. Born in Monessen, she was a daughter of Julius and Mary Doerfler Schmidt. Sister John entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Leonard's Parish in Monessen in 1946 and made her final vows in 1951. She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Mount Mercy College and her master's degree in education from Duquesne University. Sister John taught for many years in area Catholic schools, including Immaculate Conception in Washington, Pa., St. Winifred's in Mt. Lebanon, St. Peter's Northside, Holy Family in Latrobe, and St. Maurice's in Forest Hills. In addition, she was very involved in working in the area of poverty. She spent six years ministering in the RCM programs in parishes in Appalachia. She also was an educational consultant in California for federally funded programs on combating poverty. In her later years, Sr. John worked as a parish social minister at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Carnegie and St. Maurice parish in Pittsburgh. She will always be remembered for her complete trust in God, her zest for life, and her enthusiasm for all things. Sr. John always had a deep passion to help others and to do so with a spirit of joy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Eleanor Schmidt. She is survived by her sisters, Sister Mary Schmidt, RSM (Gertrude), and Catherine (Mitchell) Williams, of White Oak; and brothers, Ray (Gertrude) Schmidt, of Pittsburgh, and Joseph (Betty) Schmidt, of Monessen; and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. in the Convent of Mercy Chapel, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements have been entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, Pittsburgh, Pa.
