Gustave Meder, 64, former deputy sheriff, died at 2 o'clock this morning in St. Vincent's Home where he and his wife had been making their home for the last few years. Death was caused by a stroke following an illness of two weeks.

Mr. Meder was born in Belleville on October 8, 1872, and was a son of the late John and Frederica Meder, nee Alligier. His father was a native of St. Louis. He obtained his education in the parochial and public schools here from 1898 to 1908 and was connected with the long distance division of the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation.

For several years he was employed in the Recorder of Deeds office in the Court House and for 17 years was a deputy sheriff, leaving the office in 1930 because of a change in administration. He was always active in the affairs of the Republican Party. After leaving the Sheriff's office, Mr. Meder worked for a short time at Lorenz' Super-Service Station and then retired.

He married Mathilda Ann Engel, youngest daughter of Henry and Barbara Engel, nee Eberle, at Charlotte, N. C., on February 6, 1899, while he was employed by the A. T. and T. The couple had no children.

Besides his wife, he leaves a sister, Margaret, wife of Henry Baumgarten, a well-known barber of 410 Lebanon avenue; a brother, Arthur, and another sister, Fredericka, preceded him in death.

He was on of the three trustees for the local Knights of Columbus council and a member of the Holy Name Society. Funeral services at 8:45 a.m. Saturday from Gundlach and Co. Funeral Home to St. Peter's Cathedral at 9 a.m. Burial in Green Mount Cemetery.
