Alfred R. Allard, 87, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness with cancer.

Alfred was born September 17, 1928, the son of Valmore and Myrtle (Dluzak) Allard on the family homestead near Jefferson, SD.

He attended St. Peter’s Catholic School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1946.

On Feb. 28, 1949, he married the love of his life, Theresa “Annette” Bernard at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. To this union, six children were born.

He carried on the family heritage as a grain farmer, including a dairy farmer, and cattle feeder. He retired from farming in 2008.

Alfred and his wife, Annette enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events. Annette preceded him in death on December 28, 2004.

Many happy years were spent participating with the Siouxland Barbershop Chorus. He was a Union County Commissioner, served on the Planning and Zoning Board as well as the Farmers Elevator Board. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He directed and sang in the church choir.

On Sundays, Alfred had lots of fun loading the horses in the cattle truck so his daughters could participate in horse shows and rodeos.

He was an avid card player and loved passing time playing bridge, cribbage and pitch.

Alfred left his children a joy of music, an appreciation for nature, and love of family. God Bless America was his favorite song. His sense of humor remained until his death.

Alfred is survived by his six children, Renee (Jerry) Ries of Norfolk, NE, Nancy (Mike) Bartek of Sioux City, IA, Steve (Jane) Allard of Elk Point, SD, Janet Allard of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike Allard (friend, Tammy) of Elk Point, SD, and Jim Allard of Sioux City, IA; his brothers, Myron Allard and Rodney (Pauline) Allard both of Dakota Dunes, SD; nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law and dear friend, Elizabeth Bernard of Dakota Dunes, SD.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annette; his parents, Valmore and Myrtle Allard; his sister, Theresa Allard, and his grandson, Joseph Ries.
