Ethel Lena Klug was born on December 11, 1919, to Julius and Minnie (Korte) Hunteman in Platte County, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Shell Creek. She attended rural Platte County School District 2 and through the years would always tell about the walk to school. As a youth, Ethel enjoyed helping with the church’s ChatterBox monthly paper and she continued to help with production of the paper for many years as an adult. She was also a member of “The Happy Go Lucky Club” which was a neighborhood youth girl’s club. She stayed involved with this group of ladies through the years as they married, raised families, and moved into their retirement years.

On February 24, 1949, Ethel was united in marriage to Clemens Edmund Klug at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Shell Creek. After their marriage, the couple moved to Colfax County and lived on the family farm north of Richland, Nebraska. Ethel had many jobs over the years, from making lunches at auctions to cleaning church and District 1 School. She also helped Clem with his business: Clem’s Horse and Buggy, which included trail rides, parades, buggy shows, and driving for weddings. This involved family, neighbors, and a community of “Horse” folks.

Ethel and Clem raised their family on the farm. After Clem passed away in 1999, Ethel stayed on the farm for nearly six years after his death and then moved to Prairie Village in 2005, where she made her home for 11 years. Ethel was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Shell Creek and was involved with Ladies Aid-Quilting. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
