Renate Viola Nowicki passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Henry County Health & Rehab in Abbeville. She was 89.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time on Thursday in the chapel. Burial will be held 1:15 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola with Byrd Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Nowicki was born January 23, 1927 in Berlin, Germany. She began working an apprenticeship as a seamstress at the tender age of 14. When she was 19, she met Stephen Nowicki in Berlin during WWII and they were later married on August 27, 1947. While at Fort Belvoir, Virginia during her first pregnancy, she began learning to speak English.

In the 19 years she spent raising her children, she worked as a waitress. In 1966, she resumed her career as a seamstress working for Catalina Swimwear. In 1980, Mrs. Nowicki retired and moved to Florida. She later moved to Dothan in May 2004. She was Catholic by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Nowicki; her parents, Benno Winckler and Ilse Flatt Winckler; and her brother, Wolfgang Winckler.
