RICHARD HERKLOTZ, JR.

Rites Monday for Young Traffic Victim

A certificate of accidental death is expected to be issued by Coroner F. Eugene Ingram in Niagara Falls' first traffic fatality of the year Friday when Richard Herklotz, Jr., 6, of 73 S. 57th Street was struck and killed by a truck in Buffalo Avenue.

Funeral services for the boy will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Spallino Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Carey officiating. The Mass of the Angels will be sung at 9:30 a.m. in the Prince of Peace Church and burial will be in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

The boy, a first grade student at Evershed School, was on his way home from school when he was struck in front of 5714 Buffalo Avenue by a truck operated by Charles E. Marquart, 59, of Gardenville.

Marquart, driving a truck owned by Hickman, Coward & Wattles, Inc., Buffalo food distributors, said the child darted into the street from in front of a parked car. He said he swerved to avoid him, but the child was hit by the rear wheels of the truck, a three-ton, double-wheeled vehicle.

The child was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital at 11:55 a.m. Friday. He suffered internal injuries, crushed chest, fractures of the left leg and pelvis and multiple abrasions.

Survivors include, in addition to his father, Richard Herklotz, Sr., a brother, Robert Herklotz, of this city; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Amelia Lieker, Hayes, Kansas and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Thomas (Rose) Scozzafava.

The boy's mother, the former Miss Lee Scozzafava, died September 10, 1957.
