Paul F. Aufforth, 85, Kenmare, formerly of Bowbells, passed away Monday, May 9, 2016, at the Kenmare Hospital.

Paul was born on the family farm north east of Bowbells, ND, on July 15, 1930, the son of Carl and Grace (Carlson) Aufforth. Paul attended country schools and after his 8th grade graduation he assisted his father on the family farm. The family moved to a farm just outside of Bowbells in late 1945. As a young man Paul loved horses. He had a number of teams and saddle horses and could remember all their names. He told his grandchildren and great-grandchildren about riding horse to and from school.

Paul was a lifelong farmer working with his father raising small grains. In the earlier years they had livestock; cattle, horses, pigs and chickens. Paul met the love of his life Darlyne Nygaard at a Saturday night dance in Flaxton in 1951. Paul joined the United States Army on November 28, 1951, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on October 8, 1953. Paul married Darlyne Nygaard on April 17, 1954 at Flaxton. The couple had three children, Jeanine, Kent and Kurt. The couple retired from farming in 2002. Darlyne passed away in 2009.

Paul was an awesome mechanic and “fixer” who could fix just about anything, from tractors, combines, cars and truck to washing machines furnaces and bicycles. Numerous people called Paul for help with repairs, especially magneto work.

Paul’s pride and joy, after his family, was his Double D tractor. He put his D’s together in 1967 and they are still an attention getter today. For many years the highlight of his summer was the Divide county threshing show in Crosby where he drove his tractors in the parade and talked tractors with many people. He drove his tractor in many parades, tractor pulls and threshing shows.

After a major back surgery in December, Paul became a resident of the Kenmare Hospital Skilled Care. He received very good care and had some exceptional care-givers that he became very fond of.

Paul was a member of the Bowbells American Legion for over 60 years and served on the Bowbells Rural Fire Protection District Board.

His great grand kids were his greatest pride and joy.

Survivors: daughter, Jeanine Jensen, Bowbells; sons, Kent (Shelly) Aufforth, Bowbells and Kurt (Janine) Aufforth, Cando, ND; grandchildren, Anthony (Leah) Stoner, Fargo, ND, Chris Stoner, Grand Forks, Tanner (Amber) Aufforth, and Erica Aufforth, all of Fargo; great-grandchildren, Mychala, Isaac and Finn Stoner and Gideon Aufforth; sister, Mary (Wendell) Swenson and aunt, Marjorie Aufforth, both of Bowbells and numerous extended family members.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Darlyne; parents, Carl and Grace; brother, Carl Milas (Gwen) Aufforth and infant sister, Nancy Caroline.
