Obituary

Doris H[azel] Wood, residing at Loudon, Tennessee, formerly of Manton, Michigan, passed from life to life on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. She was 98 years old.

Mrs. Wood was born August 15, 1914, in Missaukee County, Michigan, to Charles and Minnie (Heiler) O'Berry [Obery]. She was one of ten children. At age six, she was adopted by Lafe and Libbie Rayment.

She grew up in Eckerman, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, returning to Missaukee County, where she was graduated from the Manton Rural Agricultural High School in 1932 and the Missaukee County Normal in 1933.

She taught six years prior to her marriage to Joseph J. Deike of Saginaw, and they resided in Traverse City, Michigan, until 1946. She returned to Manton with her daughters, Elizabeth Anne and Mary Jane, in 1947 after completing cosmetology certification, which privileged her to have weekends and summer employment during her teaching career, known by her hundreds of pupils over the years as their teacher, Mrs Deike.

Doris completed her work for the baccalaureate in education at Central Michigan University and a master's degree in education at Michigan State University.

She remained in the education field from 1947 through 1976 and served as Manton Elementary principal from 1966 to 1976.

She was on the Manton City Commission (1968 to 1984) and during the last six years of that tenure, was the mayor of Manton.

She served on the state MEA board (1966 to 1972), various committees of the Manton United Methodist Church, including being a member of the choir.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Alpha Delta Kappa, an education sorority.

After her retirement in 1976, she married the Rev. J. Temple Wood in August 1977.

He preceded Doris in death in September 1991. The Rev. Wood is survived by a son, Gary (Kathy) Wood; a daughter, Phyllis (Guy) Bonner; and five grandchildren: Kristie, Steven, Kari, Rebecca and Veronica. J.T. and Doris built a home at 2828 N. 41 ½ Road, where they resided until his death, after which Doris returned to her 303 S. Maple St. home in Manton.
