RITTER is the German word for "KNIGHT." It was a hereditary title of nobility bestowed on the brave Nordic soldiers who fought for Otto the Great during the 10th century.

Following the religious persecution of Martin Luther's followers by the Holy Roman Emperor, thousands fled to the British Isles. All Ritters in Britian came from the German states surrounding th Baltic Sea. There, Queen Anne aided them in immigrating to the British Colonies in the Americas. Most settled in New York and Pennsylvania where they were renowned for their innovative farming techniques.

Later, they were encouraged to move south into Virginia and North Carolina with the promise of having fertile lands deeded to them.

Hans Christoph Ritter emigrated to the United States sometime after 1683 as records show his son, Johannes was born in Germany on that date. Along with most other German immigrants, he settled in Pennslyvania. He was married to Margaretha Emilia Strausser. They had seven children:

Johannes Heinrich Christoph Ritter 1683-1739
Fredrich Wilhelm Ritter 1685-1755
Hans Albert Ritter 1686-1721
Catherina Maria Baughman 1689-unknown
Abram Otto Ritter 1690-1759
Dorothea Margaretha Faulhaber 1692-unknown
Elisabeth Emilia Bahr 1693-1761
