Marjorie Jean Dolliver Baechler, formerly of Glastonbury, died Friday (Feb. 27, 1998) in Hartford of heart failure. She was 79. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, on July 24, 1918 to Will Whitney and Elsie Eastwood Dolliver, she returned with them to Hartford a year later and remained a lifelong resident. After graduating from Bulkeley High School in 1936, she joined Travelers Insurance Company. In 1944 she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES, and was based in New London. She then attended Katharine Gibbs School on the GI Bill. She later received an Associate of Science degree from Manchester Community College. Active in the Harconnuts and area Square Dance Clubs, in 1953 she married Henry Jules Baechler. In 1964, they moved to Glastonbury with their four children. Marge became a reporter for the Glastonbury Citizen, and wrote feature articles for area publications. She had a great affinity for words and was quick with a rhyme. She composed doggrel verse and silly songs for any occasion. Her creativity also extended to handicrafts and sewing; patchwork quilts and stuffed Pooh characters were favorite projects. Marge was very active in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and numerous peace and social justice causes. She is survived by her children, Bruce, Donald, Robert and Margaret. Memorial services will be on Monday (March 9), 7 p.m., at the Friends Meeting House, 144 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford.
