Harry grew up in Nebraska in a German speaking community. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1933 to 1954. He was at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when it was bombed by the Japanese December 7, 1941. On the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor he received a medal from the U. S. government as a survivor of Pearl Harbor. His state side port was Long Beach, California. After retirement from the Navy he attended college and then taught high school (social studies/world history) at several Southern California High Schools.
