Clarence L. Heger, 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community from complications of Alzheimer's.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Clarence was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Wynot, Neb., the son of Frank and Anna (Schmidt) Heger. He grew up in the Hartington, Neb., area before serving with the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.


He married Loah Richter on Sept. 13, 1949, in Sioux City. After a short time in Pierre, S.D., the couple settled in Sioux City. Loah died Aug. 4, 1991. He owed and operated Heger Sheet Metal from 1955 until his retirement in 1994.

He enjoyed playing cards and was in the Riverside Cribbage League. He loved fishing, gardening, part-time farming and tinkering with auto repair. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and belonged to the Siouxland Senior Center.

He is survived by 12 children and spouses, Mike and Linda Heger of Sioux City, Greg and Linda Heger of Batavia, Iowa, Marty and Lori Heger of Sioux City, Larry and Patti Boltz of Sioux City, Dan and Yvonne Heger of Sioux City, Mary and Bob Brewer of Lavon, Texas, Tom and Angela Heger of Wylie, Texas, Lori Heger of Richardson, Texas, Mark and Kristie Heger of Moville, Iowa, Jamie Heger of Osceola, Iowa, Tim Heger of McKinney, Texas, and Jason and Stephanie Heger of Sioux City; a special family friend, Mike Garner of Altoona, Iowa; two brothers, Clyde Heger of Fremont, Neb., and Ralph and Lillian Heger of Crofton, Neb.; two sisters, Alvina and Bob Wilson of Denver, Colo., and Dorie Jensen of Ponca, Neb.; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Randall and Jeff Heger; a grandson, Joshua Heger; two sisters, Dolores Rodman and Irene Bohan; and two brothers, Leonard and Roman Heger.


Pallbearers will be his nine sons. Honorary pallbearers will be his three daughters.


Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Siouxland.
