The News, Lynchburg, VA; 25 July 1918, p.2 c.3: “Miss Bettie Steptoe died at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Fanny Radford, 911 Federal street, early yesterday morning at the age of 85 years. Her last illness was, however, of short duration, as she was sick only three days. She was born in Bedford county in November, 1833, and was the daughter of Thomas Steptoe and Mrs. Louisa Yancey Steptoe. She is survived by one sister, with whom she made her home, and one brother Macon Steptoe, of Holcomb Rock. / Miss Steptoe was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was for many years a teacher in the Sunday school. / The funeral services will take place from the late residence. 911 Federal street, Friday evening at 5 o’clock. The interment will be made in the Presbyterian cemetery.”
