Richard L. Kern, 87 of Topeka, died Thursday, November 24, 2005 at Midland Hospice House.

Mr. Kern was employed at Page Mill, Lyon Motor Company and was the service Manager at Shortman Dodge before he retired.

Mr. Kern was born December 27, 1917 in Holdrege, NE, the son of Frank E. & Alice B. Kersnar Kern.

He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II where he was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber. Mr. Kern was shot down on Black Thursday over Schweinfurt, Germany and became a POW in Stalag 17B for 18 months.

Richard enjoyed gardening, woodworking and fishing, was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration and was a volunteer casket bearer for Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Mr. Kern was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #534, life member of the DAV and POW.

He was married to Marcella E. Scheve on July 12, 1941 in Topeka. She died November 15, 2004.

Survivors include: One Son, John Kern of Topeka; One Brother, Bob Kern of Scranton; One Sister, Betty Whitaker of Lake Wabaunsee; Three grandchildren, James Kern and Shelly Shaw of Topeka and Julie Kenagy of Lenexa, and 8 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW. Mr. Kern will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Council #534 rosary at 6:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church, the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donors choice and sent in care of the funeral home.
