A physician, he obtained his medical degree from the American University of Beirut. He completed his residency and fellowship in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, where he joined the faculty and became a professor.
Dr. Ayoub came to the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1969, becoming the division chief of immunology and infectious disease. He was a distinguished service professor and vice chairman of pediatrics before becoming a professor emeritus in 2000.
He authored and co-authored more than 300 publications, chapters and books and has earned many awards and appointments for his work. Dr. Ayoub was appointed as president of the American Heart Association's Florida affiliate in 1988. He was honored in 1984 with the Hippocratic Award for Teaching Excellence by graduating medical students.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Greek Orthodox Church.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Louba Ayoub of Gainesville; sons Steven Ayoub, Greg Ayoub, Jeff Ayoub and Paul Ayoub, all of Gainesville; a daughter, Hala Sandridge of Tampa; and three grandchildren.
