Nobility. He succeeded his father in 1587 and reigned his territories in eastern Zemgale and acted as regent in Courland for his minor brother Wilhelm. Through the Treaty of Hofzumberge of May 21, 1596, the brothers divided the rule, the lower jurisdiction and the court, namely into a Courland domain in the west for Wilhelm with Goldingen as the residential city and a Semigallian domain in the east for Friedrich with Mitau as the residential city. In 1616 both dukes were deposed following a rebellion by the landed nobility. Friedrich first received back Semigallen and in 1618 also Courland. His brother had to go into exile. The duchy received a new constitution. The duke was now bound to the approval of the knighthood when making important decisions. As his marriage remained childless, he was succeeded by Wilhelms son Jakob,
