Edna was born on Aug. 31, 1911, one of four children, to Martin G. and Anna (Bentjen) Lorenzen. She graduated from Rockwell High School and then Hamilton Business College. She was a bookkeeper for Peoples Gas and Electric until her marriage.

On Feb. 25, 1940, in Rockwell she was united in marriage to Thomas C. Butcher. To this union were born three children. They were married for 30 years until he preceded her in death. Edna was a lifelong resident of Cerro Gordo County.

During her early years Edna made the family clothing, tended her vegetable garden and canned the fruits of her labors. She also did needlework and counted cross-stitch, made toys for her grandchildren and sewed quilts and bibs with her church friends.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Those who shared in her life include her daughter, Joanne, and her husband, Clarence Sherfield, of Ackley; one son, Donald, and his wife, Carol Butcher, of McKinney, Texas; her four granddaughters, Annette and Laura Hiebenthal, Andrea McLean and Rebecca Sherfield; and one son-in-law, Rodney Hiebenthal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, on May 20, 1970; her daughter, Mary Hiebenthal; one sister, Ruth Johnson; and two brothers, Lawrence and Walter Lorenzen.
