AKA: Ole "Gammel-Tøftin" Pedersen; Ole Pedersen; and "Gammeltøftin"

Ole Pedersen Tøfte was born in November 1787 in Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal County, Norway, the son of Peder Trondsen Tøfte (1753-1811) and Helga Thoresdatter (Opdøl) Tøfte (1755-1835), and he was christened in Sunndal on the first Sunday of Advent in 1787: 2 December. He was the brother of Trond Pedersen Tøfte Gravem (1791-1845). Ole served during the war years, 1808-1814: in April 1808 he fought as part of the Sunndal Company against the Swedes at the Battle of Trangen, one of the few victories of that Denmark-Norway war against Sweden. There is a plaque with his name and several others that participated there on a memorial stone by the road at Gravem almost at the top of the Sunndal valley.

Ole married Synnøve Olsdatter Bjørnhjell (1791-1871), the daughter of Ole Andersen Fladvad Bjørnhjell (1761-1839) and Ingrid Halvorsdatter Hoås (1759-1819), circa 1814, and they had ten children during their marriage between 1814 and 1837. They were married 57 years. He was an architect - church builder, inventor, farmer, and hunter: he inherited Tøfte Farm: Østistu in 1811 and managed as farmer there until 1844, although until his death he lived at the farm with support from his son, the next farmer there, Peder Olsen Tøfte (1816-1902). Ole built Romfo Kirke in the village of Romfo in Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, in 1820-1, and Ålvundeid Kirke in the village of Ålvundeidet, also in Sunndal, in 1847-8. Although having a reputation for being somewhat pugnacious and self-willed, he was also known as an outspoken original, his sharp repartee still alive colloquially, but he certainly was a very accomplished man in his own way. Ole died at the age of 90 on Wednesday, 14 August 1878 in Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, and he was laid to rest within the churchyard at Romfo Kirke on Wednesday, 21 August.
