Preceded in death b her father Thomas Guenter.∼Kathryn Guenter Nix, 62, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Christmas Eve, surrounded by her family, after a valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Benjamin; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah (Nix) and Donald Betzold; son Garrett and Jenn Pickett; son Eric; mother Jeanne Guenter; brothers Bill and Bob; and sister Carol. Kathy’s father was the late Thomas Guenter.
Kathy was born August 15, 1950, in Minneapolis, MN, to a DuPont engineer and a nurse. The family moved to Niagara Falls, NY, shortly thereafter. In 1972 she earned a degree in Home Economics from Bowling Green State University and began working for Gerbers department store in Memphis, TN, before transferring to Little Rock. While working as a buyer for M. M. Cohn, a job that kept her traveling extensively to New York and Europe, she met her future husband Ben. Following a five-year courtship, the couple was married June 11, 1983. A year later, twins Sarah and Garrett arrived, followed two years later by Eric.
Kathy had a tender, sensitive heart. Kathy was the first to say “How can I help?” Or she would just show up on your doorstep with a pot of spicy Cajun shrimp and a freshly-baked German apple cake — just a sampling of the vast repertoire of dishes that she artfully created and generously shared. An active member in the Friendship Sunday School class of the Benton First United Methodist Church, Kathy selflessly served in a multitude of social service projects. As a close friend said, “She did for everyone.”
If ever a woman was meant to be a wife and mother, it was Kathy. She was justifiably proud of the three wonderful children she and Ben raised. Nothing gave her more joy than time spent with her brood gathered together. Her family was by far her crowning achievement.
Kathy loved working with children and recently retired from 24 years with the Benton School system. Kathy’s faith, her love of family, and her strong desire to help those in need were the forces in her life.
Kathy loved angels. Now that she has gone home to her Lord and Savior, she is our angel. Visitation will be at the Ashby Funeral Home Thursday, December 27, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Her memorial service is at Benton First United Methodist Church Friday, December 28, 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CJCOHN, First United Methodist Church of Benton, or the Christian Community Care Clinic.
