WALTER DEMPSEY PERRY, GUARDED PRESIDENTS, WAS DEPUTY IN DARE, 84, of Caffey's Inlet, a former detective sergeant with the homicide division of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan police department for 18 years, died July 29, 1991, in his home. Born in Kitty Hawk, Mr. Perry was also a presidential bodyguard for Presidents Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower. He was a Dare County sheriff's deputy from 1955 to 1970. He had served on the Dare County School Board. Son of Samuel and Levetta Rodgers Perry; husband of Margaret Whitney Perry and Ruby Drinkwater Perry.
KITTY HAWK - Walter Dempsey Perry, 84, of Caffey's Inlet, Kitty Hawk, died Monday, July 29, at his residence. Mr. Perry, a native of Kitty Hawk, was a detective sergeant of the homicide division of the Metropolitan Police Dept. in Washington, D.C. and for 18 years he was a presidential bodyguard for presidents Truman, Roosevelt and Eisenhower.

Locally, he was a Dare County Sheriff Deputy between 1955-1970 and served on the Dare Co. Board of Education. He had been the chairman of the Democratic Party of Dare Co. and he was a Primitive Baptist.

He was the son of the late Samuel and Levetta Rogers Perry and the husband of Margaret Whitley Perry of the home.

Besides his wife, Mr. Perry is survived by three grandsons: Ronnie Beacham of Kill Devil Hills, Donnie Beacham of Powells Point and Tommie Beacham of Kitty Hawk; one sister: Clara Haywood of Colington; ten great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk on July 31 by the Rev. Robert Pitsch. Masonic rites will be held at the graveside by Manteo Masonic Lodge #521.
