Rites Saturday for Hindelang, Former Creighton Prep Teacher. When the bell rang in the Rev. Michael Hindelang's Latin class at Creighton Prep, students knew that a dread pop quiz - he called them "shenanigans" - awaited them. "He probably caused a few ulcers for those guys," said the Rev. Tom Shanahan, who taught with Hindelang at Prep and now serves as rector at Creighton University. "Once the students were out of his class they loved him. He had real heart." On Saturday, Hindelang will be buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He died Wednesday at the age of 90. After teaching Prep students for 25 years, Hindelang worked in the school's development office. In 1997, he retired and settled at the Jesuit residence at Creighton University. Hindelang died at Bergan Mercy Care Center. He had suffered two heart attacks recently that might have contributed to his death, Shanahan said. "His body just sort of wore out on him," Shanahan said. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jesuit Community Chapel at Creighton Prep, 7400 Western Ave. Besides the Latin quizzes, Hindelang was known for his companions, the black Labrador retrievers he had while at Prep, and for a great wit, Shanahan said. "He had a wonderful sense of humor even right up until the last day," Shanahan said. Hindelang was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a graduate of Creighton Prep and St. Louis University, where he received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in philosophy and ethics. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1938. Hindelang taught religion and math and served as assistant principal at Regis High School in Denver. He also taught religion, Latin and English at St. Louis High School. He moved back to Omaha in 1957. Hindelang is survived by a sister, Sister Mary Margaret Hindelang of Dubuque, Iowa. The Omaha, Nebraska, World-Herald, October 23, 1998.
