RABBI MOSHE HILLEL CAHANA, scholar, activist, Sorbonne-trained social worker, author, and Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Brith Shalom died on Shabbat morning May 29, 2004. Rabbi Cahana was a leader of the Houston Jewish Community, a fighter for the State of Israel and a leading advocate of the Civil Rights Movement. Rabbi Cahana was born in Tzvat, Israel into a renowned rabbinic family. After the assassination of his mother and grandmother by terrorists, he moved to Jerusalem where he became a participant in the underground resistance to the British Occupation of Palestine. Following World War II he moved to Sweden with his beloved wife, Alice - a survivor of the Holocaust. In Sweden he worked to restore the dignity of Shoah Survivors. After moving to the United States, Rabbi Cahana found his true calling as a pulpit Rabbi. He came to Houston in 1959 as the founding Rabbi of Congregation Brith Shalom and remained their spiritual leader for decades. During the 1960's, through his deep, personal relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he spearheaded Jewish participation in the struggle for racial equality, leading a group of Rabbis marching in Selma. He championed the cause of women's full participation in Jewish religious life and was the originator of Jerusalem Day as a permanent religious observance on the Jewish calendar. Rabbi Cahana is survived by his besherta, Alice Lok Cahana, sister Rivka Yaniv, three children Ronnie, Michael and Rina, daughters-in-law Karen and Ida Rae and grandchildren, Kitra, Tamira, Briah, David, Dvir, Sapira, Sarit, Liora, and Idit. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 31st at 3 PM at Congregation Brith Shalom, 4610 Bellaire Blvd. (713) 667-9201. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brith Shalom Rabbi Emeritus Discretionary Fund, the Houston Holocaust Museum or Israel Bonds.
