Educated at the University of Quito, he became very knowledgeable in political theory and was very active in national politics. In 1857 he was elected mayor of Quito and rector of the university, having received recognition by European scientific societies for his fieldwork in vulcanology. Aided by the military, he took control of the government in 1860. In addition to the remarkable advances in education and science, he is best remembered for the economic and agricultural initiatives the country, and for his staunch opposition to corruption, even giving his own salary to charity. Elected for a third term, he was assassinated by a group of young liberals as he was leaving the Cathedral in Quito.
