August Friedrich "Aug" Schachtschneider was born March 28, 1859 in Alt Blunowo, Graudenz, Westpreussen, Prussia (now known as Stare Blonowo, Grudziądz County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland) to Karl Schachtschneider (1834-1912) and Eleonore Kleinschmidt (1837-1909). Aug was the first of their nine children. Aug and Caroline Pick (1859-1928) were joined in marriage on Nov 4, 1833 at the Evangelische Church in Gross Leistenau, Germany (now Lisnowo, Poland). He arrived in New York, NY, USA on Dec 17, 1888 accompanying Auguste Pick (his wife's sister, and future wife of his brother, Adalbert). They traveled to Chicago where Adalbert resided. Caroline arrived in New York less than a year later (Nov 27, 1889) with their three surviving children, Bruno (5y), Bertha (3y), and Pauline (8 mo), and proceeded to Chicago. In 1895 the family resided at 99 Rees, a long gone street that was a block north of Division St, between Larrabee St. and Halsted Street. Aug filed a Declaration of Intent (to become a US citizen) on Sep 9, 1915 while residing at 4837 N. Claremont Ave. He was granted citizenship on Apr 6, 1921 with the surname Schachtschneider. He, and many family members, shortened the surname to Schneider sometime during the 1920s. Aug continued residing at the Claremont Avenue address (sharing it with his daughter Bertha's family) until he died on March 2, 1939. Aug is buried next to his wife in Acacia Park Cemetery.
