Henry J. "Hats" Ryba, 84, a resident of Lower Burrell since 1961, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in his home. He was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Export, a son of the late Martin and Josephine Lasota Ryba. He worked for ALCOA for 50 years as an analytical chemist and spectroscopist at the New Kensington plant Lab, ALCOA Research Lab and the Technical Center, before retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Church in New Kensington. He served during World War II in the 28th Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard in the European campaign, including the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded a bronze star and three battle stars. He was a 1936 graduate of Ken High School and the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in chemistry and a certificate in spectroscopy. He was a member of the 25-and-50-Year Continuous Service Club of ALCOA, a member of the American Chemical Society, Society for Applied Spectroscopy, the Pittsburgh Chemists Club, Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (PITTCON), Industrial Management Council, Lower Burrell Chamber of Commerce, Leechburg Elks, ALCOA Technical Center Toastmasters Club and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW posts in Lower Burrell. For 46 years, he enjoyed playing Santa Claus for many schools, churches, clubs and organizations. Every Christmas eve, he visited 80 homes and gave treats to approximately 300 children. He also enjoyed gardening, animals and sending birthday and holiday cards to friends and relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Heinritz) Ryba, in 1978; three brothers, Andrew, William and Thaddeus; and five sisters, Mary White, Anna Pelczarski, Victoria Potvocek, Antonia Ryba and Eleanor Ryba. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Sally) Baughman of Lower Burrell and Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Mullaney of Annapolis, Md.; two grandchildren, Brandie L. Baughman and Kelly A. Baughman; his best friend and sister-in-law, Bet Heinritz of Freeport; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN F. KRUPA FUNERAL HOME INC., 1000 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where prayers of transfer will be said Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. A Christian funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, New Kensington, with the Rev. Richard Karenbauer as celebrant. Interment, St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Lower Burrell. The Lower Burrell VFW will hold a service Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
