Thomas Arthur Vietzke, 70, passed away on a Thursday, at home surrounded by family following a brief illness.

Thomas was the son of Henry Werner and Cecelia (Bolcerek) Vietzke. Tom was raised in Milwaukee, Wis., for a short period of time before returning to Rapid River. Tom was a 1959 graduate of Rapid River High School. Following graduation, Tom continued his education at Northern Michigan University. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1965.

Tom was united in marriage to Sandra Rahoi on June 19, 1965, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Escanaba. They made their home in Rapid River where they raised their four children.

Tom's 30-year teaching career included teaching grades 4-8 at Flat Rock and Cameron Elementary Schools. He also coached basketball for several years at Rapid River, Flat Rock and Cameron schools. Following his retirement in 1995 he taught truck driving at the Midwest Truck Driving School. He also drove truck for several years, which enabled him to visit 49 states, all but Hawaii.

Tom was a life member of the Gladstone Masonic Lodge 396 F&AM. He was very active and served in many capacities. He became a Master Mason in 1970, served as Master of the Lodge in 1974 and 1999, and served as Secretary of the Lodge from 1999 through 2009. He was also Mason of the Year in 2001 and 2009. Tom was also a member of the Delta Chapter 118 Royal Arch Masons, Hiawatha Council 65 Royal and Select Masons, Escanaba Commandery 47 Knights Templar, Ahmed Temple of the Shrine, R.C. Hatheway Chapter 49 Order of the Eastern Star and the Upper Michigan York Rite College 40.

Tom was a family man. He loved the great outdoors, which included hunting, fishing, riding ATVs, snowmobiling, boating, cutting wood, taking family and friends on tractor/hay rides, and playing cards, especially Smear. He also enjoyed camping, and traveling. He and his wife traveled to 49 states including Canada. Tom was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan, loved Hershey bars, popcorn and Coca-Cola.

Tom was survive by: his wife of 46 years, Sandra; children; Vicki (Carl) Logan, and their children, Mikayel and Akayshia, Kelly (David) Kurpier and son, Philip (Stephanie) Rummel, Thomas (Danell) Vietzke Jr., and their children Laura and Thomas, Leo (Danielle) Vietzke and their daughters, Paige, Kailey and Leondrea; great-grandchild, Aleah Jade Wesley; brothers, Richard Vietzke, Terry (Kay) Vietzke of Waukesha, Wis.; sister, Judy (Richard) Solis of Wheeling, Ill.; father-in-law, Leo Rahoi; mother-in-law, Ruby Rahoi; his very close nephew Henry Vietzke and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins and their Yorkie, Sir Teddy Bear of York.

In addition to parents, Tom was preceded in death by: brother, Henry; and nieces, Tina Clark and Joelle Vietzke.

Visitation at the Skradski Funeral Home. Funeral services with Rev. Fr. Jacek Wtyklo of the St. Charles Catholic Church officiating. Masonic rites conducted by the Gladstone Masonic Lodge 396 F&AM.
