Nathan was born at 224 D Street in Sparrows Point, Maryland on January 18, 1914. He was the son of Leah Ann Hand and Raymond E. Willey. He was adopted by his grandparents as a child and neither parent played a prominent role in his life. He loved to play sports as a child. He first married Clara Virginia Aspinall and they had a daughter, Cynthia Ruth Hand. The later divorced. Nathan's second marriage was to Nina Weinmann. They had three children, Nina Hand Keyes, Arthur Hand and Charlie Hand. Nathan was a foreman in the steel mill in Sparrows Point and was remembered by employees as a kind, fair man. Nathan died on July 16, 1973.
