SSG William Theodore Anderson, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Statesville, NC.

SSG William Theodore Anderson was a member of the Army. SSG Anderson served our country until August 25th, 1968 in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was 24 years old and was married. It was reported that William died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SSG Anderson is on panel 46W, line 011 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 4 years.

I was with SSG Anderson the day he was killed. It was only his third day in the field. I was the driver on the tank he was commanding. I received a Silver Star that day in August of 1968 as an 19 year old PFC, but he was the hero, not me. He paid the greatest sacrifice. Dennis Roe. Grass Valley, CA 95949.

Obituary: CITY NATIVE KILLED IN WAR: A Statesville native who volunteered for duty in Vietnam was killed there on August 25th. SSG William T Anderson, 24, died when a vehicle he was riding in came under enemy fire. He had attended Morningside High School, where he played on the football team, but left in his junior year and soon joined the North Carolina National Guard. He then went into the Army as a career solider, went through basic training at Ft Bragg and was sent to Friedberg, Germany, with the 3rd Armored Division. He served there as a tank commander and platoon leader and while in Germany completed his education and received his high school diploma. After his German tour of duty, SSG Anderson was stationed at Ft Hood, Texas for eight months. He then volunteered for duty in Vietnam and left for that country on August 9th. At the time of his death he was with the 25th Infantry Division.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs Bonzie Anderson of Elizabeth City, NJ; his Mother, Mrs Roberta Anderson, of the home, a daughter, Sharon of the home, his Father, Edward Anderson, Sr, of Staten Island, NY; three brothers, Edward Anderson Jr, of the Bronx, Sp4 Michael C Anderson of Ft Bragg and Raford Vonzell Anderson of the home; three sisters, Synetta, Theresa and Vanesta, all of the home.

He served with Bravo Troop, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Silver Star for Gallantry, The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
