Leona was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 23, 1900, a daughter of Allen Burton and Frances Gertrude (Hornkamp) Kuhlman.
She graduated from Chicago Teachers College in 1919 and taught kindergarten in the Chicago public schools.
She married the late Rev. Dr. Ralph Daniel Heim on August 22, 1927 and with him moved to Greenville, Pennsylvania where he joined the faculty of Thiel College. There Leona served on the staff of the Leadership Training School of the International Council of Religious Education.
When Ralph became Dean of Hartwick College, the couple moved to Oneonta, New York, where Leona was organizer and president of the Hartwick College Women's Club and a director of the Oneonta Women's Club.
In 1939, Ralph joined the faculty of the Gettysburg (PA) Lutheran Theological Seminary. In Gettysburg, Leona served on the boards of the Adams County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Adams County UNICEF Committee, the Gettysburg College Women's League, and the Central Pennsylvania Synod of the United Lutheran Church Women.
She was a charter member of the Adams County Public Library and was instrumental in the organization of Gettysburg Garden Club and Senior Citizens Club. She held the position of executive director of the YWCA of Gettysburg from 1957 to 1962.
Leona is survived by children Paul Kuhlman Heim, Elmira Heights, and Martha Heim Horton, Elmira; grandchildren Marianna Raho Thompson, Wantage, England, and John Anthony Raho, Elmira; grandchildren Michael McDaniel and Tara McDaniel, Mamaroneck, New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Following cremation at the Northern Bradford Crematory, a private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.
