Johannes Mathis [aka John & Xaver] BLENDER was born February 2, 1809 in Gutenstein and was baptized on the day of his birth in the Catholic Church at Gutenstein. Johann was raised in the Catholic faith and received a basic education. At age 21 he married Theresia STROPPEL on May 4, 1830 in the St.Martin Katholische [Catholic] Church at Messkirch .
There is a family legend that Johann was a Bergermeister [Mayor] in the town of Gutenstein. It appears he also was involved in The German Revolution of March 1848, a failed attempt toward democracy.
When the conflict reached Gutenstein, Johann and the town committee joined in the fight. This author suspects he was imprisoned for a time in the Rastatter fortress.
March 2, 1854, Johann paid his passage and boarded the sailing ship "Chimborazo" at Port of Le Havre. The ship was bound for New Orleans, Louisiana.
