She was born May 20, 1946, in Vienna, a daughter of Henry and Ella Sudheimer Hilke. She was a graduate of Vienna High School. Helen worked for the Missouri Division of Employment of Security for 10 years. She volunteered at St. Mary's Health Center and the Samaritan Center in Jefferson City. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She is survived by two sons: Michael Backes and wife Kim of Jefferson City, Marcus Backes and wife Jenni of Greenville, South Carolina; four grandsons: Clayton and Justin Backes of Jefferson City, Trey and Joshua Backes of Greenville, South Carolina; three brothers: Dan Hilke of St. Charles, Jim Hilke of St. Charles, John Hilke of Freeburg; and four sisters: Theresa Willibrand of Jefferson City, Irene Stratman of Rolla, Pat Hilke of St. Charles, and Marie Kloeppel of St. Charles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Hilke and Ella Hilke Fritzemeyer; a sister, Emily Hilke; and a brother, Henry Hilke.
