Leander F. Wessel, 83, Effingham, KS, passed away, Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, December 30, 2016 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Effingham, KS with Fr. Benjamin Tremmel, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm, Thursday, at St. Ann’s Church with visitation to follow until 8:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to St. Ann’s Church or the Atchison County EMS – Effingham, KS. Becker Chapel in Effingham is in charge of the arrangements. Leander was born on December 24, 1933 in Kelly, KS, the son of Joseph A. and Freda (Niehues) Wessel. The family moved to Effingham in 1940 and Leander graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham, in 1951. Leander entered military service in January 1956 and served in the US Army in Korea and Japan through December 1957. He then served four more years in the Army Reserves. Leander worked for Jackson Farmers Co-op where he later became a branch manager in Effingham. Leander was a member St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Effingham and Lakeview Golf Club at Horton, KS. Leander enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. His greatest enjoyment was being able to spend time with his grandchildren.

Leander and Stella Peltier were married on December 28, 1968 in Jamestown, KS.

Survivors include Leander’s wife of 48 years, Stella; a son, Daniel (Kristie) Wessel, Leavenworth, KS; a daughter, Michele Wessel, Overland Park, KS; two grandchildren, Eric and Kara Wessel; brothers, Joseph Wessel, Jr., Effingham and Thomas Wessel, Ft. Worth, TX.

Leander was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vincent and Jerry Wessel; sister, Florence Edwards.
