May 1, 1920 to November 29, 2016 Canby Herald Obituary for Dec. 14, 2016
Richard F. Cheadle, a thoughtful and genial man, died at the age of 96, Tues-day November 29, 2016 after a brief illness. Richard was born to Richard and Florence Ella Brown Cheadle, May 1, 1920 in Lebanon, Oregon. He was the second of four children; his older sister Barbara, younger brother Norman, and youngest sister Mary.
His father helped build roads all over the state of Oregon during Dick's childhood in the 1920's. The family lived in various beautiful places such as Pistol Mountain, Cascadia, Grants Pass, Ashland, and many more. They lived in cabins or tents staying in one place as long as each road job lasted. One of Dick's favorite early memories was his mother Florence standing on the porch of their tent-house on a mountain in Curry County, shooting her pistol at a wild pig who was fleeing after attempting to steal the family provisions.
Dick had a beautiful baritone voice, and throughout most of his life enjoyed singing in choruses, choirs, and barbershop groups. He also had a great whistle, and usually could be heard either singing or whistling while working in his barn or shop. Richard Cheadle
Richard Cheadle
He graduated from Monroe High School in 1937. He married Geraldine Ann Meek on May 14, 1948 and farmed in the Corvallis area, before moving to his Canby farm on Dryland Road in 1960, where he farmed the land he loved and raised sheep from a flock purchased with his father in 1938
Although Dick wanted farming to be his lifelong job, to make ends meet, he worked as a millwright at Publisher's Lumber Mill in Liberal, Oregon. Richard retired from Publisher's in 1985 after working there for 25 years. He finally (reluctantly) retired from farming in 2014 shortly after his 94th birthday.
His wife Geraldine passed away in 1987, after 39 years of marriage.
Richard remarried in January 1988 to Betty Ellen Butcher who died in June of 2007. They were married for 19 years.
He was dearly beloved by his family, and had many enduring friendships which he greatly valued. He had a good memory, was well-read, and could converse easily on many subjects. He read the newspaper all his life, and had a large collection of books which he enjoyed until a few weeks before his death.
Richard is survived by his sister Mary Cheadle of Eugene, sister-in-law Virginia Cheadle of Portland, children: daughters Susan Larson, Charlotte and son-in law Val Skvortsov, Phyllis and son-in law Dan Walton, and son Rich and daughter-in law Diana Cheadle. He is survived by 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Also step-children Susan McLain, Mer-rie and Fred Postlewait and Ann and Rudi Sommer and 15 step-grandchildren , 20 step-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life gathering will be held Saturday, January 14th at Smyrna Church of Christ, 31119 S. Highway 170, Canby, Oregon at 2:00 PM.
