Robert L. Burkhardt, 76, of Rhinebeck and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Robert was a life member of Red Hook Post #7765, VFW in Red Hook, a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and a former member of the Rhinecliff Fire Department. He served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Philippine Sea. Born on November 2, 1931, in Rhinebeck, NY, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Fanny (French) Burkhardt. Robert married Catherine Marks in 1956 at the Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck, NY. Catherine survives at home in Rhinebeck. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Teresa & her husband Donald Hewett of Binghamton, NY, and Robin Burkhardt of Ravena, NY, two granddaughters: Erin Hewett of Blacksburg, VA, and Renee Hewett of Rochester, NY, a brother: Wayne Burkhardt of Millbrook, NY, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. He is also survived by a loving and devoted staff of nurses. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 21, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Rhinebeck, Astor Dr. Rhinebeck, NY. The Rev. Thaddeus Dragula will officiate. Interment will be at Rhinebeck Cemetery, Rhinebeck.
