Charlotte Elenore (Milek) McCarthy died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 14, 2017, having recently turned 103.

Charlotte was born to Henry Milek and Julianna Bruch Milek on Dec. 30, 1913, in Thermopolis, Wyo.

She married Justin McCarthy on June 20, 1934. She and her husband began married life living in a sheep wagon on their sheep and cattle ranch. She was an integral part of their building a thriving cattle ranch outside Thermopolis in the midst of the Great Depression. She would cook huge meals for all the neighbors and friends who came to help at branding in the spring. She designed the family home and talked about how she laid the stone floor at the summer ranch cabin. She was an avid seamstress. Charlotte was a woman of great energy, enthusiasm and strong faith and a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Catholic Daughters. She loved life and her family and served as a great example with her strength, determination and grace. They all said she was their greatest inspiration. She was a widow for over 50 years, but never lost her happy outlook on life.

She moved to Klamath Falls to be close to her daughter Rita in the early 1970s and got involved singing in Melody Mothers, joining Sojourners, dancing at the Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center and playing bridge. She traveled extensively, loved gardening and was a member of PEO.

She was preceded in death by her husband Justin, son Jay, daughter-in-law Danna, brother Cornelius as well as her parents. Charlotte is survived by her daughter Rita Pederson (Clark); son Burke McCarthy of Casper, Wyo.; daughter-in-law Karen McCarthy of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren Darren McCarthy (Beth), Kevin McCarthy (Holly), Steven McCarthy, John McCarthy, and Diana Ellis (Troy); and great-grandchildren Justin, Rebecca, Logan, Tyler, Malia, Matt, and Joey.
