NEW CUMBERLAND — John Joseph Kuzio, 96, of New Cumberland, W.Va. passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 9, 1920 in New Cumberland, W.Va. a son of the late John & Katherine (Harasiuk) Kuzio, Sr. He is also preceded in death by his wife Blanche Marie (Josefczyk) Kuzio in 2002; and 2 sisters Mary Ann Kirpan and Ann Derda.

John was a retired teacher & coach from Hancock County Schools. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3526 and VFW Post 3526 Last Man's Club; a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Men's Parish Council at Immaculate Conception, and was a 2008 Inductee to the New Cumberland Hall of Fame.

He was an Army veteran serving as a WW II Staff Sergeant. He was sworn in at Fort Hayes in Columbus on Jan. 1, 1942; from Columbus he traveled to Charlotte, N.C. where he joined Air Force Ordnance Outfit 707.

After graduating from New Cumberland High School in 1940, he worked in the Sheet Mill at Weirton Steel Corp and played baseball for the Tin Mill.

In 1949 John played baseball for the Wheeling Forresters in the Wheeling Intelligencer league and found a position as assistant coach of all sports at New Cumberland High School.

In addition to coaching, he taught Social Studies, drivers education and physical education.

In 1952 he began to impact the local sports community when he initiated the first junior high Colt football team.

After 35 yrs of teaching John received the Merit Award from the W.Va. Department of Education in 1977.

Surviving are 3 children, John R. (Cheryl) Kuzio of Marion, Ohio; Paul S. (Tammy) Kuzio of Fond du Lac, Wis.; Mary Elizabeth "Bea" (Joseph) Cuervo of Presto, Pa.; 1 brother Stephen J. Kuzio of Pinellas Park, Fla.; 8 Grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren and 1 great grandchild on the way.

Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and Friday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home.

Mass Christian services will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Eric Antwi as Celebrant.

Military services and interment will follow in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Catholic Funeral Rites will be Friday at 7:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Cumberland VFW Post #3526 P.O. Box 151 New Cumberland, WV or the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 1016 Ridge Avenue New Cumberland, WV.
