Sioux Falls, SD ~ Mearl E. Atwood, age 90, died on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Center in Canton, SD.

Funeral services: 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation: 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Mearl Emerson Atwood was born on December 26, 1926 in Sioux Falls, SD to Bert Sr. and Bertha (Holte) Atwood. He was raised and received his education in Sioux Falls. Mearl honorably served our country with the US Navy from 1943 to 1947. Following his service, Mearl made his home in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mearl was united in marriage with Elva Hammerstrom on March 4, 1950 in Canton, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. Mearl first worked for 16 years at the Serum Plant in Sioux Falls before spending over 35 years working as a custodian with the Sioux Falls School District. Mearl also worked for many years as a custodian at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where he was a longtime member. Mearl was also a lifetime member of the Sioux Falls V.F.W. Post 628.

Mearl enjoyed playing golf, fishing, woodworking and helping anyone in need. Above all he loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mearl was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend who will be deeply missed.

Mearl leaves behind his children: Gene (Julie) Atwood, Sioux Falls, Marlys (Dwight) Wood, Sioux Falls, and Herb (Deanna) Sundall, Kennebec, SD; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Weidenbach, Sioux Falls, SD; brother, John (Pat) Atwood, Des Moines, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mearl was preceded in death by his parents, Bert Sr. & Bertha Atwood; wife Elva Atwood on May 19, 2010; siblings: Ray Atwood, Bert Atwood Jr., Harley Atwood, Lavada Baker, Palmer Atwood and Ida Tidwell.
