Nikolai, Edward,Saginaw Twp., Michigan. Beloved father and grandfather passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Cartwright Hospice Residence. Age 91 years. Son of the late Peter and Catherine (Landman) Nikolai, Edward was born December 3, 1919 in Saginaw, Michigan. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Edward married Ruth M. Bachand on June 28, 1958. She predeceased him December 1, 2010. Edward was employed at Lufkin Rule for 27 years and then at Saginaw Steering Gear Plant #2 for 15 years retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Lutheran Faith and U.A.W. Local #699. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Surviving are one daughter, one son and their spouses, Tamara and Bill Lobsiger, Dimondale, Michigan; Val and Nancy Nikolai, Saginaw; four grandchildren, Karen and Peter Mezitt, Mark and Kala Nikolai, Julia and Jeremy Karn, Paul and Joy Lobsiger; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers including his brother, Otto who was lost in WWII, on the USS Paul Jones #230, while serving in the U.S. Navy.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Shattuck Manor and The Cartwright Hospice Residence for their loving care of Ed. Honoring Mr. Nikolai’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty). Rev. Mark Buckert will officiate with Military Services conducted by American Legion Post #439. Private inurnment will take place at Chapel Hill Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
